About The Agency
Formerly the Kentucky Racing Commission, the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority has been in existence since 1906. In 1959, the Kentucky Harness Racing Commission was created to regulate standardbred racing. In 1992, the General Assembly abolished the Kentucky Harness Racing Commission and the Kentucky State Racing Commission and created the Kentucky Racing Commission. On January 6, 2004, the Kentucky Racing Commission was abolished and the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority was created.
The primary duty of the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority is regulating the Kentucky horse racing industry. One of the oldest racetracks in Kentucky is The Red Mile, a harness track, which is the oldest racetrack in Lexington, Kentucky. The Red Mile is also known as one of the nation’s most respected harness tracks. Another of Kentucky’s oldest racetracks is Churchill Downs, a thoroughbred track located in Louisville, Kentucky. Established in 1874, it is the oldest continuously operated racetrack in the United States. The first Kentucky Derby was held there in May 1875 and has been run every year since on the first Saturday in May.
